One of my favorite photo series of all time is Lee Friedlander’s Self-portraits. I love the way he imposes his shadows on angles and objects and says fuck it, let’s make this shit beautiful instead of avoiding these things that were once intrusions.

I recently developed a dangerous thing where I spend hours and dollars collecting photos from estate sales that ended up in thrift stores. As I was sifting through a giant vat of photos, I started noticing a lot of photos with similar shadows and reflections to that of Friedlander’s Self-portrait series.
I started collecting these accidental self-portraits in various thrift stores (mostly Brooklyn) and have come across about 100 photos. I’m now in the process of laying them out in some sort printed sequence. Until then, here are some of my favorites I’ve found:
